CADET INTERNS

Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern positions have been made available through a partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District. This new opportunity includes the involvement of five Long Beach Unified School District high school students who have completed at least one year of the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Cadet Program. These individuals support the Junior Lifeguard team through both administrative work out of Fire Headquarters and the Junior Lifeguard Office, as well as assist the Junior Lifeguard Instructors during JG Prep Classes throughout the spring. Interns will have opportunities to learn more about careers in public safety, work in a professional environment, and develop a better understanding of the operations of the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. Both the JG team and Marine Safety Division are looking forward to the impact these interns will have on our Junior Lifeguard Program.

We are proud to announce the following individuals as the 2021 Junior Lifeguard Interns:

Hello, I’m Ben Farfan. This will be my 7th summer as a Long Beach Junior Lifeguard, and my 2nd summer as a Cadet in the program. I am 16 years old, all of which have been spent in Long Beach. At Long Beach Polytechnic High School, I study in the PACE program and play on the JV Volleyball team. As a dually enrolled student at Long Beach City College, I am also taking an Intro to Psychology course. I act as the Senior Patrol Leader in my Boy Scout Troop and the Community Outreach Officer in the Long Beach/South Bay youth chapter of Red Cross. Unicycling, stilt-walking, and juggling add an extra bit of fun to my weekends. I’m looking forward to helping my community continue to be a safe and fun place!

Valeria Gamez

2021 Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern

Hi! My name is Valeria Gamez. I was born and raised in Mexico and moved to Long Beach when I was thirteen. I’m currently a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High School, which has become my second home and is where I spend all my time. Aside from swimming for Poly’s swim team, I also swim for Morning Star Aquatic Club. Summer of 2019 I did Junior Lifeguards for the first time as a cadet and fell in love with the beach, the ocean, the overall experience, and program. Outside of swimming and school, I love hanging out with friends, teaching myself to play the guitar, reading books, and studying Mandarin. I am very excited to be in this program and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Hello, my name is Liam Williams. I am currently a 17-year-old junior at Millikan High School, where I’ve been on the junior varsity swim team for two years and have straight A’s. My dream school is UCLA and would love to be in their Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences program because I love weather so much, I can’t stop talking about it. This upcoming summer will be my 5th summer as a Junior Lifeguard and 2nd summer as a cadet.
