Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern positions have been made available through a partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District. This new opportunity includes the involvement of five Long Beach Unified School District high school students who have completed at least one year of the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Cadet Program. These individuals support the Junior Lifeguard team through both administrative work out of Fire Headquarters and the Junior Lifeguard Office, as well as assist the Junior Lifeguard Instructors during JG Prep Classes throughout the spring. Interns will have opportunities to learn more about careers in public safety, work in a professional environment, and develop a better understanding of the operations of the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. Both the JG team and Marine Safety Division are looking forward to the impact these interns will have on our Junior Lifeguard Program.

We are proud to announce the following individuals as the 2020 Junior Lifeguard Interns:

Valerie Gamez

2019-2020 Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern

Hi! My name is Valerie Gamez. I was born and raised in Mexico and moved to Long Beach when I was thirteen. I’m currently a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High School, which has become my second home and is where I spend all my time. Aside from swimming for Poly’s swim team, I also swim for Morning Star Aquatic Club. Summer of 2019 I did Junior Lifeguards for the first time as a cadet and fell in love with the beach, the ocean, the overall experience, and program. Outside of swimming and school, I love hanging out with friends, teaching myself to play the guitar, reading books, and studying Mandarin. I am very excited to be in this program and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Ella Jorgensen
2019-2020 Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern

2020 Long Beach Lifeguard

My name is Ella Jorgensen, and I am a junior at Millikan High School where my favorite competitive swim event is distance freestyle on the school's varsity team. My favorite subject in school is science, and I want to study biology, marine biology, or human medical genetics in college.  My dream school is the University of Hawaii Manoa. If I become a marine biologist one day, I want to track and dive with sharks in order to help conserve their species. One fun fact about me is that I love sharks, and I have swam with them before! I have been in the Junior Lifeguard program for 5 years and I am beyond excited to try out for Long Beach Lifeguards this March. I have wanted to become a lifeguard ever since I first started junior guards. I am so thankful to be given this opportunity as a Cadet Intern, and I am looking forward to a great year!

Hanna Kawamoto

2019-2020 Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern

2020 Long Beach Lifeguard

Hi, my name is Hanna Kawamoto and this will be my first time working as a Cadet Intern for the Long Beach Fire Department, Marine Safety Division. I have been lucky to experience both Junior Lifeguards and Cadets for the past two summers. Born in Long Beach, I’m a 4 foot Millikan junior of the COMPASS program and active swimmer for Millikan Varsity. My bread and butter event is surprisingly the 500 yard freestyle. Besides being a swimmer, I can often be found drawing, reading, running, or jamming out to the Broadway musical, Hamilton. Law and history are two of my favorite subjects and thus, I hope to receive a degree in history or political science. Cadets has taught me so many things which has gravitated me even closer towards a career in public service. Although I haven’t been here as long as most, the ocean and this program have always felt like a second home to me. The water has been a constant factor in my life and to be given this opportunity to share my passion with my community under such talented, hardworking men and women, I plan to make every second count. I hope to help inspire and ensure a future purpose for this internship and show that anyone can make a positive impact in their community.

Ivy Martin

2019-2020 Junior Lifeguard Cadet Intern

Hi, my name is Ivy Martin! I grew up in Long Beach and am currently a junior at Millikan High School where I swim Varsity. Being a Junior Lifeguard as well as a member of the Vikings Aquatics club team, has helped me gain such a strong appreciation and love for our ocean. This upcoming summer will be my 5th year as a Long Beach Junior Lifeguard and 2nd year as a Cadet. I’m so excited to be a Cadet Intern this year and work closer with the LBJG program and the Marine Safety Division of Long Beach. I am so grateful to work behind the scenes of this amazing program and I can’t wait for the summer!
